Shared Web Hosting
Shared Web Hosting is a hosting server that is divided by shares between many users. This will give benefit for the user who don’t have any deal with it, but for users that need more control will become an impediment.
The control panel systems that shared hosting uses are the commonly platform that most of web hosting provider use. These include cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, Helm, Ensim, H-Sphere, and many other platforms.
All of the server management, security update, and the installation of server’s software are the hosting provider’s responsible. Most of this kind of hosting have Linux as their operating system, as most of Contol Panel are made for Linux. But the Plesk Control Panel itself is made in two versions, Windows and Linux. Both of them are similiar, whether it’s interfaces and it’s functionality. There are many Shared web hosting providers just in United States. You can find the providers from a small design firms, to millions dollars providers.
Shared web hosting usually have two types. They are Name-based and Ip-based. The Name-Based are often called shared IP hosting. Because they serve multiple host names with just one IP address. The IP-based is often called dedicated IP Hosting. Different from Name Based shared hosting, Ip-based hosting have many hosts with each different IPs.
When a name-based shared web hosting request some resources from the server, it will automatically include the requested host-name. This is the information that used to divide the name-based shared web hosting. Name-based shared web hosting have some disadvantages :
1. Name-based web hosting doesn’t properly support the secure websites (HTTPS). Because of the same IP address, all the users must share one same digital certificate. It’s happen because SSL/TLS handshake have been occurred before the host-name was sent to server.
2. This will not working in some browsers that don’t send the host-name in requests. This happen in an old HTTP/1.0 browser. But most of browsers today already have the HTTP/1.1 protocol.
Overall, the shared web hosting is still great to host your website and have a great quality in a lower cost.
